'Fundus Photography'
Modern technology
makes a real difference

Fundus photography or ‘back of the eye imaging’:

  • Is a specialized medical imaging test used to take pictures of the structures located at the back of the eye, including the retina, macula, fovea and optic disc. The retina is located at the back of the eye and is a thin tissue layer containing millions of light-sensitive nerve cells.

  • Produces a series of photos that are helpful for diagnosing, documenting, and monitoring certain eye conditions including glaucoma, retinal detachment and macular degeneration as well as general health conditions such as stroke, heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. Early signs of these conditions can show on your retina long before you notice any changes to your vision or feel pain. While eye exams generally include a look at the front of the eye to evaluate health and prescription changes, a thorough screening of the retina is critical to verify that your eye is healthy.

  • Allows our Optometrists to literally make a photo timeline of your eyes. In this way they can map each of your eye’s individual life cycle and developing health as well as compare side-by-side with images captured at previous visits.

  • Is a short, painless procedure carried out in every Makis Eleftheriou Opticians Eye Examination to provide our Optometrists with the most technological and accurate information about your eyes. Nothing touches your eye at any time. It is suitable for the whole family. To have the exam, you simply look into the device one eye at a time and you will see a comfortable flash of light to let you know the image of your retina has been taken. The capture takes less than a second and the images are available immediately for review.  You can see your own retina.  You see exactly what your eye care practitioner sees and everything will be explained to you. Our clients regularly tell us how reassuring this is, if everything is OK, but it also helps provide a better understanding of any problems too.

Please feel free to discuss Fundus Photography with our Optometrist on your next visit.
